About ELS language centers

About ELS Malaysia

ELS Malaysia is an English language training provider for international and local students. Its programmes serve learners preparing for university, improving their English for work and everyday communication, or looking for a shorter and more flexible study option.

ELS has operated in Malaysia since 1990. Its programmes use progressive proficiency levels and a placement assessment to identify an appropriate starting point. Students develop speaking, listening, reading, writing, grammar, and vocabulary through classroom instruction and practical language activities.

ELS Centres in Malaysia

The official ELS Malaysia website currently lists four centres:

  • ELS Kuala Lumpur.
  • ELS Subang Jaya.
  • ELS at Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) in Serdang.
  • ELS at Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) in Johor.

Programme availability varies by centre, so students should confirm both the course and study location before registering.

Certified Intensive English Programme (CIEP)

The Certified Intensive English Programme (CIEP) is the main pathway for students preparing for university study. It develops academic English as well as communication, research, presentation, public speaking, and note-taking skills.

ELS states that CIEP is recognised by Malaysia’s Ministry of Higher Education for university admissions. Completing the required level may satisfy the English requirement at universities that accept the programme, but the required level and any exemption from external English tests depend on the university and academic course.

CIEP has ten levels, from beginner to advanced. Students complete a placement assessment to identify their starting level and progress after meeting the requirements of their current level.

Other English Programmes

ELS Malaysia also offers programmes for different study and professional goals, including:

  • Online Certified Intensive English Programme (CIEP Online).
  • General English Programme (GEP).
  • Semi-Intensive English Programme (SIEP).
  • Communicative English Programme (CEP).
  • Workplace English and corporate language training.
  • IELTS and TOEFL iBT preparation courses.
  • Holiday English and student mobility programmes.

Schedules, entry levels, and teaching locations vary by programme. Students should choose a course based on their goal, current level, and preferred study period.

How Students Learn at ELS

ELS programmes develop the four core language skills of listening, speaking, reading, and writing, together with grammar, vocabulary, and pronunciation. Lessons use interactive tasks, group activities, and practical situations to help students apply English in and beyond the classroom.

The academic pathway also introduces skills used in university, including critical thinking, research, note-taking, public speaking, and presentations. Some centres provide dedicated spaces and technology for additional language practice.

Who May Benefit from ELS Malaysia?

ELS Malaysia may suit students who want to:

  • Prepare for university study in English.
  • Improve general English for conversation and everyday life.
  • Develop workplace English and professional communication.
  • Choose an intensive or semi-intensive programme.
  • Prepare for IELTS or TOEFL iBT.
  • Study in person or select an available online programme.

What Should You Check Before Registering?

Start by identifying your goal: university admission, general English, professional communication, or test preparation. Then confirm which centre offers the programme, the next start date, your placement result, the number of lessons, and the progression requirements.

If you plan to enter a university, ask the university to confirm in writing which CIEP level it accepts for your chosen academic programme. Do not assume that one level or language-test exemption applies to every university and course.
